Seed Media Group: About

Working at Seed

We are a diverse team of scientists and designers, entrepreneurs and activists, engineers and marketers. Many of us would be happy spending our days reading about squid, AI, unified theories, and distant stars. And for some, that’s all in a day’s work! Others view science as the way forward and come to Seed to spread this message to millions. Still others recognize that science itself is changing and are in it to innovate new technologies to help scientists respond to this change. And some are at Seed to architect a media and technology company for the 21st century, from the ground up.

We’re part nature and part nurture: We have a strong culture, a big vision, acclaimed brands and technologies, and gifted people. But we’re also a living, breathing company in a living, breathing economy and culture. We like change. We like new ideas. We like questioning our assumptions. We like things that have never been done before — that have the potential to change minds and markets. We hire people who have the passion, intelligence, and ambition to do the same.

If you’re one of those people, we invite you to learn more about new positions at Seed under Current Openings.

Seed Media Group : About : Logo

Seed Media Group: About

Designed by Stefan Sagmeister, our logo reflects society through the lens of science. The logo takes its inspiration from nature’s phyllotaxis structure, a Fibonacci-derived algorithm present in a multitude of settings, from the face of a sunflower to the alternating leaves on a plant to the architecture of highways. Depending on its context, the logo adapts and changes color to reflect its cultural surroundings. Our logo brings “Science is Culture” to life.

The phyllotaxis logo was recently exhibited as part of the ‘Design and the Elastic Mind’ exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York

Seed Media Group: About

Portfolio

Our mission is two-fold: To raise global science literacy through innovation in media and communications; and to advance science by developing technologies to help research scientists around the world.

Media

Our Media portfolio includes Seed, the award-winning popular science magazine in print and online, ScienceBlogs, our online community and the largest conversation about science on the web, and other ventures, such as museum exhibits, conferences, and international licensing, that leverage the Company’s brands and asset library.

Seed Magazine

Named the magazine that “best captures the cultural zeitgeist” (Media Post) and one of the top magazines in the United States (National Magazine Awards), Seed stems from and offers its readership a distinctly 21st century view of the world. As science transforms the social, political, economic, aesthetic, moral, and intellectual landscape of our time, Seed delivers insights, opinions, profiles and reports from the frontline of this cultural shift, all presented alongside cutting-edge design and photography. In print and online, Seed is essential reading for the world’s science and technology thought-leaders, and the magazine of the intellectually curious.

“The best comparison for Seed is the early years of Rolling Stone, when music was less a subject than a lens for viewing American culture.”
—Utne Independent Press Awards (Winner, Science and Technology, 2007)

“My hands-down favorite science magazine.”
—BoingBoing

“The magazine’s tag line is ‘Science Is Culture’, and this glossy takes both very seriously. The writing assumes a basic or better understanding of scientific fundamentals, a rare case in a dumb-it-down media culture of respecting and challenging an audience. The layout and photography are cutting-edge, and its cultural discourse… is truly thought-provoking.”
—Chicago Tribune (50 Favorite Magazines, 2008)

ScienceBlogs

www.scienceblogs.com

ScienceBlogs, our online community, is the web’s largest and most vibrant conversation about science and society. With more than 100 blogs worldwide across 10 channels of content—from life science to the environment—ScienceBlogs offers its more than 1.5 million readers an intelligent and spirited daily dose of what’s new in science and a community of like-minded individuals who share their passion and curiosities.

“[The bloggers are] eloquent, funny, sarcastic and really smart (the last kind of goes without saying). No sooner does a paper appear in a major (or even a minor journal) than they jump in with knowledgeable reaction.”
—TIME.com

“To be sure, there have been previous periods when science captured the fancy of Americans who did not live or work at Cape Canaveral, the Livermore National Laboratory or Los Alamos. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, the space race produced a generation that said ‘A-O.K.,’ drank Tang and yearned to embody ‘the right stuff.’ In the 70’s and 80’s, magazines and newspaper sections were created to chronicle the rise of personal computers and the booming interest in what was called ‘science fact.’ ...”

Technology

Seed Technology is re-imagining and re-architecting end-to-end the way scientists across disciplines, labs, and countries interact with each other, with projects, and with information.

Our latest project, ResearchBlogging.org, is a site powered by Seed Technology that helps scientists make use of the blogging surrounding peer-reviewed science. Our new technology allows scientists to clearly label and tag blog posts which are then aggregated, indexed, displayed, and disseminated, effectively making blogging more functional to the advancement of science.

Check back here soon for information about upcoming product launches.

Seed Media Group : About : Vision

Seed Media Group: About

Vision

Seed Media Group was founded by Adam Bly in 2005 on the following premises:

  • Science is transforming our global culture and conversation unlike ever before, shaping markets, informing policy, inspiring the arts and deepening our understanding of who we are, where we come from and where we’re heading.
  • The pursuit and impact of science is borderless.
  • Science is a powerful tool for solving global problems, from climate change to clean water to poverty and development.
  • Science affects every single person on the planet.
  • Widespread science literacy is essential in the 21st century.

Our vision is to build a media and technology company for the 21st century that reflects and advances these convictions.

Grants and Community
Seed Media Group is committed to strengthening public interest in science and improving public understanding of science around the world. To that end, we support like-minded causes and organizations. For example:

  • We distribute copies of Seed to over 15,000 high school science teachers across the United States, bringing breakthrough science communication ideas into the classroom.
  • We support meaningful philanthropic efforts such as the ScienceBlogs Donors Choose Challenge and match reader donations inspired by our bloggers’ commitment to supporting science education at the local level.
  • As a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, a community of global leaders that are actively implementing solutions to the world’s challenges, Seed Media Group committed $100,000 to raise science literacy.
  • We donate free advertising across our print and online properties to not-for-profit organizations that share our mission. To learn more about this program, please contact us with information about your organization and a sample of your ad.

Environmental Responsibility
We consistently evaluate all areas of our business—from the paper we use in our magazines to the light bulbs we use in our offices—to reduce our carbon footprint and to encourage sustainability. To that effect, we are very interested in learning about products or services that would support this mission; if you are a potential vendor or just want to share your green ideas with us, please contact us.
